Get your foot in the door
Employers are always interested in hiring new people. So, it’s usually pretty easy to get an interview if you’re even vaguely qualified. And, yes, you may have to take an unpaid internship at first. The good news is that these internships are usually short-term and (if they’re any good) lead to paid work with better prospects down the road. For example, according to Forbes Magazine at least 70% of all Fortune 500 executives started their careers as interns.
Learn as much as you can about banking
Banking is different than most industries. You’ll typically have to pass a series of exams and tests before being hired by even an entry-level role, and you’ll need to find an apprenticeship as well. Banks don’t care about your experience or college education; they care that you can do what it takes to make money for them. A surefire way to learn more about banking is by spending time on its fringes, such as working at a bank or finance company so you can see how things work day-to-day.
Look for new opportunities
If you’re looking to further your career, never let a new year come and go without developing and posting an updated resume. To make your resume stand out, include any skills or certifications you’ve earned over time, as well as any awards or recognitions you’ve received. If you’re currently working, it’s also helpful to list any projects you’re proud of or roles where you took on more responsibility. That way, when potential employers search your name online, they’ll see not only that you’ve been consistently employed but also that your work experience continues to grow and expand.
Stay true to yourself
While it’s tempting to take a higher-paying or more prestigious position, sometimes moving jobs can mean you have to completely alter your lifestyle. Don’t give up what makes you happy just because you see an opportunity that seems better on paper. Before accepting any offer, think about how it will fit into your life and if it’s worth sacrificing other aspects of your health and happiness—because making compromises is a surefire way to end up unhappy. Of course, people often change careers throughout their lives, but make sure there’s some connection between what you do now and where you want to be in five years. If not, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate where you’re headed as well as which work/life balance really works best for you.
Be confident
A great attitude to have when you’re looking for work is that every time you go on an interview, it’s an opportunity to learn something new. If you don’t know about something—say, how stock options are taxed or why your company uses JIRA instead of Trello—it’s your responsibility to ask questions and show curiosity about new topics. Great hires are always looking to grow their skills and expertise. Interviews can be stressful situations; take them as opportunities and try not to sweat it if you don’t know everything there is to know about your potential employer. At least now you’ll have some ammo for future interviews!
Take everything as an opportunity to learn something new
The first time you talk to someone new, try to take everything they say as an opportunity to learn something new. While engaging with people is part of your everyday life, many people just scan their surroundings and what’s going on. This comes from being focused on yourself—thinking about how to get from one place to another; whether or not you’re doing what you want; and how long it will be until something else happens. Try pausing occasionally and thinking about what others have said when they respond to you: Why did they say that? Where are they coming from? What are their concerns right now, based on what I’ve said so far?
